The three best websites to help your language studies

Updated: Jul 15, 2021

Having learnt languages for over 11 years now, I have tried and tested a whole host of language tools and websites. Yet there's 3 in particular that I keep coming back to to help with my language learning journey!

1. Linguee

Linguee is a great website to look up translations of certain words or phrases. Not only does it suggest translations similar to a dictionary, but it also provides you with lots of examples of how other people have translated a word or phrase.

These examples are super useful as you can them use them to decide the best translation to use in the sentence you would like to write.

Here's an example of me searching how to say 'turn a blind eye' in Spanish.

2. WordReference

WordReference is one of my favourite online dictionaries to use! It has a really simple layout and tells you everything you need to know about a word, such as whether it is formal, informal, a noun, verb, adjective etc. These little details can really help you when deciding how to use a word in a sentence!

3. Reverso Synonyms

Sometimes when you are writing and speaking in Spanish or English you can find yourself saying the same words again and again! If you are taking any language exams this can be really noticeable to an examiner, and they might mark you down for repetition.

So how do we solve this? By using synonyms! These are words or phrases that have the same meaning as another word or phrase. For example, entertaining is a synonym of fun.

Reverso Synonyms is a great website that will show you a whole list of synonyms. Below I searched for synonyms of 'interesante'.
